New Farmer's Markets`
Monday, September 6, 2010

On the subject of eating Texas foods and beverages, we at the Texas Food and Wine Gourmet.com are always on the lookout for great Farmer’s Markets.  So let us know of great ones in your region.  Two new markets in the Hill Country are great and certainly worth checking out.  Well, actually one is brand new and the other is the long-awaited re-opening of a much-loved Dripping Springs Farm Stand.

In Fredericksburg the new Farmer’s Market, Fredericksburg Farmer's Market, is held at the  Markplatz on Main Street every Thursday from 4-7 p.m.  The market’s motto says it all:  “Get Fresh – Eat Local”. The market started on May 15th to a standing-room-only crowd of over 1,000 people.  Farmers, peach and berry growers, food manufacturers, and a restaurant or two offer their best.  You can also purchase the yummy and oh-so-good-for-you grass-fed beef from Fredericksburg Grass-Fed Beef Farms, when they butcher a steer and Twin County Dorpers Lamb. (See feature in this section..)  For more information see the market’s website: www.fbgfarmersmarket.com

Marianne Simmons, owner of Onion Creek Farms in Dripping Springs, has re-opened her Farm Stand to the delight of Dripping Springs residents.  The market is open each Friday from 3-6 p.m. Her offerings are, with the exception of Red Barn Beef, grass-bed beef from Travis and Leigh Sebera, neighbors from right down the road from Marianne’s farm, all grown on her farm and hand-harvested that morning.  All produce is Certified Organic.  Recent produce included several kinds of squash, including the Italian heirloom Costata Romanesco Zucchini; fingerling potatoes, red new potatoes and Yukon Golds; slicer and pickling cucumbers; banana peppers and jalapenos; heirloom eggplants and a white with purple stripes; onions (red, yellow and pearl size); garlic; shallots; and fresh herbs by the bunch, including many varieties of basil.  You can also bring a Mason jar and pick a nice bouquet of zinnias!  For more information, directions, and to get on her mailing list, e-mail Marianne at stellastardust8@yahoo.com
